How difficult it is to write a postcard…

I don’t know what you think but I am always amazed about the difficulties which may occur while trying to write a postcard or a letter with our students. I am now not only speaking about the language which can be challenging for our year 7 students, but am reflecting on the fact that many of them actually don’t know what to write. We had to first brainstorm the most important points .. and a postcard has really only a small surface to write on, but it was such hard work to fill it in. It is also interesting to see how they struggle with the spelling, how they concentrate on the work and want to do their best. So many times they asked the question “Can you help me?”!

It is so different for us to write something in the exercise-book or to publish it on the Internet. I really believe in the power of this project, that it will help our students to feel more confident using English as the language of communication. But this is only one side of the medal, on the other side is the communication itself, the “how-to” interact with “strangers” at the beginning and how we develop a friendship over country borders.

  1. That sounds so familiar! I try to tell the kids that imagine that you are the receiver, you get a postcard from someone, what would you it to say? That sometimes helps someone, but still they always struggle with ‘what to say?’. Looking forward to your cards!
